"In terms of performance it doesn't offer much more than the Model T. The Nano has a two-cylinder 0.6 liter gasoline engine with 33 horsepower, giving it a top speed of about 60 mph, according to Tata. It gets 50 miles per gallon."
How can it only get about 50 MPG

Its a cheap ineffecient (relatively speaking) engine. Thats what you get for $2500. I'm sure they cut every possible corner that they could. Things suffer when this happens.

The Model T comparison is appropriate in the big picture, in terms of getting a chunk of the population into cars that weren't in them before - with all its implications.
But the Nano will offer much more performance than the T.
60 mph vs. about 45
50 mpg vs. about 25
Oh - and you don't have to use a hand crank to start it! (Though at 0.6L, a kick starter wouldn't be out of place.)
(Disclaimer: of course, can't vouch for the accuracy of the Nano's figures.)

It really looks like a decent little car. No frills, good fuel economy.
Hopefully, it burns fairly clean.
To put a lot more cars on the road in a place like India or China really can't be a good thing for air pollution.
We in the US are the worst though for having such a love affair with our cars. One could argue that our almost our entire economy and culture is based on the automobile.
You can't blame others for wanting to be able to get around by themselves in their own little piece of private property.
In the long-run, we really do need to get away from cars, starting with petrol-burning ones. Electric cars, bikes, e-bike, and bike-cars all have some great potential for the future.

I dont know maybe it might actually help with the pollution problem there. It meets the emission standards and if it can get some of the old cars off the road that don't that's good. Then in a couple of years they will have cars that are cleaner then the motorcycles and stuff they are now driving.
