Duct tape degrades quickly in UV (sun) light. The adhesive dries and becomes powdery.

I used foil tape on my alloys and it turned out fine. Been there several weeks without a problem. I have since removed one spoke because it was ripping around the valve stem. And I figure at least now I can say its got plenty of brake cooling blah blah.

With them fully taped up though I saw 0.9 mpg difference average according to some scan gauging.

I used packaging tape to attach the coroplast discs to my trim rings, then painted over the discs and tape. Theyre still holding up just fine. I installed them at the beginning of August and drove it till the end of November.

maybe some kind of varnish coating would help the tape fight UV

Hrmmmm. I wonder if there is a more "UV durable" version of duct tape. I like the foil tape idea, but the duct tape is a better color match and I think it's "flexiness" (can't think of a better word) is more compatible for the shape of your wheel cover.

"Spar" varnish is designed for boats, and has UV inhibitors built in. It still won't save the adhesive from deteriorating, though.

Counterintuitively, clear duct tape is more durable in UV.
