I still can't help but vote for a healthy 4.3 V6 instead... Those are 265cu in(IIRC), and you get less rotational loss, and a lighter, shorter block...

It dissuades, points to a better, lower rpm engine

This is the problem when debating the merits of this engine vs. that engine. It almost doesn't matter what you're talking about, one will have strengths over the other, all the way from Stirling (heat reversible, runs on anything) to hafnium-fueled nucleonic reactors (fueling duration measured in months, relatively benign nuclear fuel). And sometimes the debate, as you've noticed, wanders off into La-la Land.

You've already spent some time wrenching the 267, doing a little exploratory surgery. What was your conclusion? Is that what you're going to run with?

He's already got many V8s setting around and wants to use one of 'em. I can sure appreciate that line of thinking.

Thumbs up

I don't want to use any of my 305, 32SJ, 350 or 400 blocks. I'll save them for race engines.
I just thought using an engine that I bought for $30.00 would be cool and different. Let's say it's my poor-boy way of recycling.
Hears what I came up with.

1. 1980 267 block with stock pistons
2. 1980 '415 heads w/ 1.720 x 1.300 valves milled to 56cc
3. Comp Cam 244/244 195/195 .400/.400 110 LSA timing events are 16 48 56 8 with cam advance 4 degrees
4. Edelbrock EPS manifold with Holley 390 carb with my Annular Booster. Dual centering float and Quick Fuel adjustable Vac Pod.
5. Standard melling 55 oil pump.

Engine will be built for 0w-30 or 5w-30 synthetic oil. All engine bearings will be steel back as to hold their tolerances when the temp goes up.

The calculated Static Compression Ratio is 9.05:1 and the Dynamic Compression Ratio is 8.06:1.

I have a lot of the parts, but I'm looking at spending about $600.00 to finish the project.

Performance Trend Fuel Economy Calculator says a 2900 pound S10 with a 5 speed T10, 2.73 gear and 26" tires should get 30+ MPG @ 50-55 MPH. I need to know what the optimum rpm to use for crying with a carb. I think I need to keep it below 1700 rpm to ensure the carb stays in the idle circuit and not the power circuit.

I forgot to say that I have an AEM AFR meter to go in the truck as well as a Vacuum Gauge.

The choices of gears I have are 2.44, 2.57, 2.75, 3.00 and 3.25. I've been collecting these ring gears for a long time.

OH in that case a healthy 6 or even 4 would be more suitable.

ME personally I would definitely do a 4.8 newer engine, the gen IV's have DOD. I mean if a new vette can get 30 mpg and have the ponies then you should definitely be close with a smaller v.8 in an s10. you could find the 5.3 aluminum block and use the 4.8 internals. dont think they made a 4.8 aluminum. one of my projects has the 98 ls1 and 6 speed. I have also had a 350 version and will say the drivability and the mpg increase of the newer engine is definitely worth it.

4.8's can usually be had for cheap since most replace them with bigger engines. Not sure about 30 dollars cheap....

I also rented a full size chevy van recently and it had the 4.8 with 6 speed trans and amazingly for a brick on wheels got decent mileage be awesome in an s10.

There are lots of different power valves available for that carb. Just drop the power valve to a 8.5 or so and it will stay on the cruise circuit a lot longer. That is why I like AFB carbs, you only have to change springs. Easy to dial in with your wide band o2.
