Chernobyl exploded when cooling water flashed to steam and then the graphit caught fire and burned, fukushima exploded from hydrogen build up in the containment dome.
They don't explode like a fission bomb, there is only 3% enriched uranium in commercial power reactor fuel. A uranium fission bomb needs at least 80% enriched uranium and is not constructed anything like a reactor.

Newer Gen 3+ reactor designs have improvements in place to prevent such events. And are now stated to be passively walk away safe. Gen 4 MSR reactors will be fool proof if we ever wake up and allow their development.

The new show didn't seem to be rated very well on Netflix, so I haven't looked at it yet. I like Bill when he's sticking to science, but his politics is very off-putting, unentertaining, and unfunny.

You don't have to convince me.
The Hollywood movie educated public needs to be reassured on anything nuclear and our stuck in the cold war era department of Energy needs to be convinced to finish what they started with thorium.
To the government recycling nuclear waste isn't worth it unless they can make nuclear weapons out of it.
Apparently reducing the waste volume by around 95% and cutting the time it's dangerous from thousands of years to under 100 years aren't good enough reason to recycle it.

Right now the main use for thorium is my tungsten welding electrodes and people are even becoming afraid of the tiny, nearly undetectable amount of radiation they give off.

That's because most people believe that human actions are warming the planet at least some. But most people do not belive it's a problem or a problem that can or should be fixed.
Actually only 15% to 20% of voting age americans believe man is the driving force behind climate change and that this is a problem that must be fixed now.
I call them the militant minority.

The Bill nye show sucks because his politics only appeal to a small numerous of people, as most religions often do and the rest of us don't need some elitists engineer scolding us just for breathing.

Bill Nye has alienated both extremes. He is vocal against man made climate change deniers (and science deniers in general such as creationists) and is pro family planning, but is also pro gmo, pragmatic about nuclear power, and did a show to tell people not to waste their money on magic crystals. Hopefully one day science and common sense will prevail.
