I've always thought asphalt, sand, and fiberglass were fairly poor materials for a roof considering they last 30 years at best. Glass seems like it would hold up better.
A solar roof should replace the roof to cut down on the cost and complexity of it.
It's like a BBQ grill cover for your BBQ grill cover. Why do I need a cover for my cover? what protects the cover of the cover?

The Jetfoiler is neat. I'd want mine in silver.
The VW hovercar would require specialized roads but they show it on unmodified city streets.

Notice it comes from the future (unless you're in Australia [?] at the time of posting). What an inspiring story, it even covers when he contemplated suicide.
Joe Scott didn't know much about him until he needed a subject and he listened to an audiobook. I've got 6 or 8 books Synergetics I and II, the patents, etc..
Thanks, Joe.

I installed 50 year warranty asphalt shingles on my new roof, under the solar panels.
Glass solar shingles seem like they have the opposite problem - the shingles probably will outlast the solar cells. And installing them is a bit of a pain - they have to sit on a set of light purlins, to allow for the wiring. This requires a reworking of the trim at the edges of the roof.

I'm all metal roof.
It's recyclable.
Asphalt never again, unless it's going on my drive way.

A roof probably ought to be fabricated at the factory to the exact specifications of the roof, and be delivered as a single installable units. It should be a continuous piece so there are no points for water to collect.
Perhaps if it's too tall to pass under bridges during shipping, it can be made into a couple shorter sections.
All of the interconnections should be built within the unit.
