Good luck reversing that reality on a 'national / global' scale!

Well, thank all y'all for your support.
I know about cultural inertia, obsolete media like TV and pictures hanging on walls; and all the things you didn't mention like zoning laws and mortgage financing.
My thinking is that eventually there will be a carrot-and-stick situation. The stick is energy independence and the carrot is psychological well-being. Being cooped up in little boxes makes people a little cra-cra (present company excepted of course ).
edit: If you're stuck in a box [shaped room], put triangles in the four corners of the ceiling. The room will collect less dust and have better acoustics.

I sleep with my head in a corner, it's like having an ear trumpet.
I'm reminded of one of my favorite Steve Jobs stories:

Code Critique: RoundRects - Apple QuickDraw Source Code
Then he pointed out the window. "And look outside, there's even more, practically everywhere you look!". He even persuaded Bill [Atkinson] to take a quick walk around the block with him, pointing out every rectangle with rounded corners that he could find. When Steve and Bill passed a no-parking sign with...

From SpaceWeatherNews (S0):
agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com: Super-Intense Geomagnetic Storm on 10–11 May 2024: Possible Mechanisms and Impacts
Quote:
Abstract
One of the most intense geomagnetic storms of recent times occurred on 10–11 May 2024. With a peak negative excursion of Sym-H below −500 nT, this storm is the second largest of the space era. Solar wind energy transferred through radiation and mass coupling affected the entire Geospace. Our study revealed that the dayside magnetopause was compressed below the geostationary orbit (6.6 RE) for continuously ∼6 hr due to strong Solar Wind Dynamic Pressure (SWDP). Tremendous compression pushed the bow-shock also to below the geostationary orbit for a few minutes. Magnetohydrodynamic models suggest that the magnetopause location could be as low as 3.3RE

Almost equal to the Carrington Event. Think we dodged a bullet? The penultimate story was about the Galactic core erupting!

Near a Carrington? I thought the scales were logarithmic.

Different scale. youtu.be/_7nq5C3RZT8?t=120
L-scale from 5 down to 1.5 (Earth radii). Carrington was at L-2, last May was at L-3.3. L-1 is a short circuit.

So to me picture looks inverse logarithmic. But verbage said L is an earth radius so probably not
