The last mammoths died out less than 4,000 years ago according to science. Mammoths may have lived in Alaska as recently as the 1800s.

Ah yes and there's also a "significant winter storm" that looks like its going to dump feet of snow in the Rockies starting October 12.
Usually you don't see anything like this till late November.
