I'm a bit skeptical about getting the sort of fuel economy numbers he does by driving at or just under the speed limit, but it pleases me greatly whenever media covers us.

^^^ ditto. Been an uptick in articles lately, it seems. Probably widely ignored until it's $4 a gallon again, sadly.

I'm sure he's using every trick in the book, but for an article on CNN, he is only going to mention techniques that are more palatable to the general public.

I remember the first time gas went over $3 a gallon and everyone freaked out and everyone was trying to buy prius and electric vehicles that didn't exist.
Then 10 years later gas is at or near $3 a gallon and people go right back to buying SUVs and pickup trucks and almost no one wants electric vehicles.

I'm imagining quite a bit of EOC on that trip.

I've gotten that motor down to 3.5 l/100 with some EOC and 60 psi in the tires, but a mix of traffic and some hill climbs, versus 4 l/100 for the guys who weren't EOC'ing... I'm sure with EOC and absolutely no traffic, you could get down close to the 3 l/100 range. 2.89 certainly sounds possible, but if that trip required ANY mountain or grade climbing, that would be a tremendous accomplishment!

Whereas I'm still driving the Insight that I bought several years before the first time it hit $3/gal :-)

I'm not much into the "environmental" aspect of hypermiling, like probably 90% of the Americans might also not be, but the financial benefit is too hard to ignore.

I remember driving to Fl. when gas first hit $3 a gallon with my cruise control set at 65 mph. I was passing 75% of the vehicles on the interstate with a 70 mph speed limit. When the price of gas hit $4 per gallon the same thing happened again.

Today drive the speed limit on any interstate and you're taking your life in your hand with most people driving past you at 10 mph or more over the speed limit.

I looked long and hard for my HX and almost three years later, I still do not have an MPGuino. I knew my car was supposed to get better fuel economy at 65 MPH than 55, but that sounds too good to be true, right?

When I drove faster, I got worse fuel economy. I guess I drove too fast. Several tanks ago I decided to drive 65 instead of 55 and I went from 46 MPG to 48. That is not dramatic, only 2 MPG, about 4%, but while driving 18.2% faster?!

I drove home from my mother's house today and while I dislike speeding, I convinced myself to drive 65 in a 55 to save fuel.

Everyone still flew past me.
