I have already replaced the turn signal and tail light bulbs with led's. I don't know what you mean by fender eliminators. please discribe?

Janvos39 I did a quick test out in the garage to see what path my foot and leg could / would make when steping up onto the foot peg to mount the bike, and discovered that my foot goes over the seat where the rider sits without having to be a contortionist. This will allow me to fill up the space behind my back and be able to do as you suggest and reduce drag with a fairly large tapered section behind the rider. thanks for the insperation to look harder at the issue. What I have in mind is a ferm tapered nylon seat bag directly behind the rider as lugage bag.

a fender elimenator is a little bracket that holds the turn signals and license plate so you don't have that big fander hanging down.

If I ask the question what can be done to a motorcycle that does not involve fabrication, that would reduce fuel consumption? I come up with install a large tank bag, to fill up the space between the fairing wind shield and the rider, and install long smooth sadle bags that fit close behind the riders legs. What these two things do is reduce the rate of change of cross section which should reduce air drag. an othe easy change is to go up one tooth on the front sprocket to reduce rpm.
what other answers to the above question can you think of?

Any studies on tank bags? Me thinks they're completely in a turbulent wake and would have no aero effect.

I know of no study on aero effects of tank bags, you are corect in thinking that they are in a tubulent wake. That is why filling up that area would have a similar effect to a "boat tail"

To gain a better understanding as to why/how a tank bag would/could have an aero effect look at all the posts related to pick up truck box covers and canopies. The other example you might want to consider is the aerodynamics of a convertable with the top up and with the top down. I think we can agree that a convertable has lower drag with the top up. The motorcycle examples can be found on C. Vetter web site; he goes to cosiderable trouble to close in all openings as does janvos39 with his burgman scooter. Basic fluid dynamics also tells us that changes in cross section absorbe energy so that anything one does to eliminate unnessisary changes in cross section will help reduce drag. the tank bag will reduce the unnessisary change in cross section behind the fairing and between the rider and the fairing. An other example is the effort put into filling the in the space between the truck and the trailer on highway tracktor trailer units.

It won't because it the air is completely turbulent behind the fairing and windshield and tank bags do nothing to effectively close openings or smooth out changes in x section.

Now, maybe if you make one out of clear PVC and have it rest on your legs and extend out to the sides far enough to interact with the airstream, and extend upward in front of your face to interact with the airstream, you might have something.
