Some diamond plate is like that but some has interlocking ridges. Even if you are depending on the thickness of the sheet between the ridges it would still be more rigid, just like those skid plates with the dimple die holes.

Gotcha! A picture ISSSSSSSSSSS worth a thousand words! Both the plating you show WOULD be stiffer from the inter-weaving of the raised portions.
