I had a Prius doing "eco-friendly" driving in front of me a couple of days ago. Crawling up hills at WELL below the already-low PSL, then coasting downhill at WELL above same. I dunno; I get wanting to be efficient, to get your personal best ever tankful, or whatever. Just move over and let other folks by.
(My solution: turn off and go a different way. We have a wealth of little roads around here.)

Was this a 2-lane road? If so, yeah, the dude's a jerk. If it's a 4 lane road and he was in the right lane, you could have passed him. However, based on the way you tell it, it sounds like you were more or less STUCK behind him. If I'm on a 4 lane road, I occupy the right lane and I hypermile and people are free to pass. I stay generally +-5mph from PSL, sometimes +-10 depending on the height of the hill. We've got some pretty serious ones here in North Alabama. I'll power up the hill and then throw it in neutral and EOC down. I just wished my SG2 would go into the 9999mpg mode sooner than 9 seconds after I kick the key back to "IGN II", lol.

This is the reason dash cams are more and more popular around here. I plan to buy one too, if i spare enough of cash.

I give him a few flickers of my high beams because "wtf dude? I was doing the speed limit in the right lane...what more do you want?" and he goes into a COMPLETE RAGE! Stomps his brakes again, slows down to about 20mph, all the while flicking me off and flailing his "you're number 1" hand around like an insane person, then takes off. ...

Your responses were right. Bring down the anger. De-escalate. Under-react. I have been in these situations too. And I have had every kinda reaction. Whenever I have participated in the ****tiness and aggression, nothing good or useful comes of it. People have accidents, cause accidents, get wrapped up into other people's rage-accidents innocently.
I think my best responses have been non-responses. I don't remember them because the whole situation is forgettable when I don't participate or even register more than needed to stay out of a psychopathic ego battle with someone.
Do like the truckers do (generally): under-react and keep on keepin' on.

I'll never understand that maneuver and it seems to happen EVERY time I leave town.

OTOH, what would have happened to that meth-head if you'd had a gun in your car?

Had the "pass, merge and take the exit" maneuver happen to me on my way to work this morning. Driver wasn't overly aggressive, but it was just puzzling to me that he (dude driving a Ram) nearly missed his exit in his excitement to get around me at the last minute, for an exit I wasn't taking.
