The speed limit was recently raised from 65 MPH to 70 MPH on the I-80 turnpike. Knowing that the companies whose livelihood depends on making accurate maps (GPS manufacturers like Garmin and TomTom), sometimes take up to a year to update their maps to reflect changed speed limits on freeways (I-77 north in Canton still shows 55 MPH as the speed limit on my TomTom, even though it's actually 65 MPH), what incentive do these insurers have to ensure their maps are also accurate?
Put another way, I could be doing the speed limit on the interstate here in Canton, or on I-80, and I could be charged higher rates by the insurer because their funky device and their computer maps said I was "speeding." (And if you think that "they don't record location" negates this argument, keep in mind this very thing they're doing now, recording braking and speed and time of day, was unthinkable 5 years ago.)
No, thank you.
