I saw where he was whittling on blocks of wood.

has he started building the car yet?

As you know, a WHOLE lot of things change once you start laying down materials and plans go awry.

Niel: Batteries do have an internal resistance, so depending on the size of the pack and how much current you are pulling from them (greatest at startup) you will need to cool the battery pack.

Even for me an all electric Leaf would do for approx 90% of my driving, if I got a utility trailer to tow behind ugly it would go up to 99% (since some of my needs will be shifted over from the daily driver). The only problem is then the occasional need to haul a large load a long distance which ugly is neither efficient to do nor is it really safe to do.

So does anyone know if there are any plans to release a PHEV midsized 4 door pickup any time soon?

Zipcar = over 80 miles away in the opposite direction from my usual direction. But yes they have them. The closest rental place with pickups is 50 miles away in the opposite direction. Last time I rented a truck it was a huge monster (no midsized at all) when my truck was being repaired from a wreck, and they got upset when I scratched the bed. , and I wasn't allowed to tow which is a large portion of that last 1% such as towing a friends broken car 75 miles in the middle of the night.

My area is pretty rural.

I have a 3 axis CNC machine and I am drafting the 1 15/16" thick sections to cut them out of foam. I have done some trial cuts on the foam -- see this page:

http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...-11969-30.html

It has been slow progress, partly due to the fact that I was back at work (for pay) for about 8 months, and also I had to work out the kinks with software and the g-code and the foam and the CNC machine.

I'll post progress on that thread, soon. I'll be making an order for about 100 sheets of foam, but I am doing the CAD drafting laying out the sheets to get an accurate count.

I've found that nearly every person I know who owns a pickup truck is more then happy to trade vehicles with me for a day or two or even longer for those times that I need to use a pickup truck because it's so rare that they use their truck as a truck, if we had a Zip-car like service around here and they offered use of a truck, half or more of those friends would most likely sell their trucks.
I think that services like Zip-Car can do a great deal to help people feel better about owning an electric car as their only vehicle along with getting people who feel they still need a gasoline powered car feel better about owning a smaller car or no car at all.

Check out these YASA direct drive motors, with 750Nm and 400Nm torque respectively:

YASA-750 | YASA Motors

YASA-400 | YASA Motors

And here are the FVT motors that generate similar torque -- about 1400 ft pounds:

Having a controller limit output in the lower gears shouldn't be out of the question. Transmissions can take a lot more power in the top gears. Or, don't go bananas with a motor that's 10x what's needed. Or put skinny low traction tires on it and let them be the "fuse" that blows first.
