sounds a lot like the Gen1 Honda Insight, except my Insight can carry a passenger, and i could take it camping, etc etc its fairly close to a 'normal' car. where as this thing is a lot closer to a motorcycle

84mpg highway is pretty good, but again, i still beat that w/ my Insight, so i'm not too impressed. i'd have to see 120mpg to even consider driving such a little 'car' as this..... and even then i doubt i'd pull the trigger and sell my Insight...... 150mpg, yeah Ok i couldnt turn that down, but thats nearly double what this thing gets, so 'dream on' i suppose!

Yeah, but your Insight cost how much new? Thats the selling point of this. Brand new this costs $6,800 (claimed). I can barely find a used Insight for that price around here, and it would have 100k+ miles on it and need its battery pack fixed.

The Elio has two seats - they are in tandem, so the passenger sits directly behind the driver.

When I watched the video I wanted to watch how easily that girl got out of the back seat.

It skipped that part, so I guess that it is difficult.

Technically, couldn't you put a child seat back there?

true that; but you KNOW that the quality knob has been turned down to make that happen. i'd still take a 100k insight over this NEW vehicle, and the thing is, so would 95% of everyone else too. it will be interesting to see if it takes off, if people start modding it, and how easily it can be modded to reach ~120mpg

I was thinking about the arguments for a used hybrid. I am in the process of changing jobs (I hope) which will mean I have to give up my company van. I have been looking into commuter vehicles (my commute will be all highway).

I don't want to go used, and a hybrid is a waste of money for highway driving.

I was looking at new cars and the standouts are fiesta, rio, veloster, etc. for both fuel economy and price. all of these are in the $13 to $16k area with just under 40mpg hwy.

half the price and twice the mpg is very attractive for me. I don't think I am alone in the sector. anyone who is in the market for an econobox would have to look at the Elio for these reasons.

the "low tech" approach they say they are using is also very attractive because that means I could work on it and it leaves a ton of room for improvement.

just my .02.... might even be worth less than that.

I've been an enthusiast of tricycles for a long time, because of the good balance between the running cost of a motorcycle with the weather protection and overall safety of a car.

That's a good reason favorable to the Elio.
