What is the "the right balance of power and fuel economy" they are after, does anyone know ?
Looking at those pics it looks like a standard SOHC 3cyl unit.
EDIT - 2valver - so 1980s...

They should have just bought Mitsubishi's new 1.0L or 1.2L from that they put in their Mirages. Its an up to date 3 cylinder design and we all know Mitsu loves to sell engines to any one who'll pay.

Or indeed any one of the other makers of 3cyl economy style engines - VAG, Toyota, PSA, Ford, GM...
Perhaps they were all too small fry ?

But look at what pushrod 2 valve V8's can do now days.
In some ways a simple 2V engine can do very well for efficiency due to swirl characteristics that can be designed in. 4V engines generally need to use more tumble, getting ports setup for swirl is hard to package, and doing different variable lift or opening just one to promote swirl ads a lot of cost and complexity.

Years ago SAAB came up with a figure of 36lb/hp as optimum power to weight.

Optimum for what? Could make arguments that that number is too low on a really aerodynamic car with mpg as the goal. Or could argue its much to high for a car with less than steller aero and the intention to not feel like a complete slug.
So I need to ask again, optimum for what?

I'm calling this thing f'd. Engine development takes YEARS. If they rush through it there will be durability issues. Even a simple air cooled single cylinder engine takes a couple years to push through design, testing, calibration, durability, etc.

They are working with an experienced "partner" on the production from what I gather.
Their "new" engine is most likely an older design that already has molds and tooling ready to go.
Correct me if I'm wrong here...
