If you want to succeed, then you have to take a chance. Elio is taking a chance.

There may be ATV drive trains big enough to power the Elio. Both gas and diesel. And they might not have a conflict of interest.

Paul Elio has said, 'you have to go big or go home'. That is, they feel they need large production numbers. Can't make it on a smallish quantity, and hoping to grow large from that level.
I think the need for many tens of thousands of lightweight and efficient engines, at low cost, is what primarily drove the decision to build their own engine. After reading everything here on the topic, I have to grant that it could prove out to be a mistaken decision. But I do understand the decision. I think they'd never get the performance and price they need and want, from an outsourced engine.

You can have it both ways but Elio only wants it one way, big.
I would have far more trust if he was offering any product to start, even god forbid a kit that makes your geo metro into an elio. I do not think the kit market would compete in the same market as his eventual car, thus I do not think it would result in any sales lost.
Next year, next year, next year.
I wish him luck but next year is always a year away.

4+ years ago my place was red tagged, torn down, removed. Elio was exciting news then. Sitting around for a rebuild was a long time to wait. And a long time to set my life priorities. The Elio is not as exciting to me now. I moved back into a rebuilt home 4 months ago, but 3-wheel vehicle options have almost gone nowhere since 2010 (even shrank actually). Very sad things take so long. Long enough to be a mind changer when it comes down to wanting an Elio in my garage.

If rattlesnakes weren't a protected species we could catch them and process the oil. Instead they are selling emu oil for aches and pains. Here in Upstate NY a local plant produces drivetrain parts for Polaris ATVs. We have hundreds of former aircraft workers to build uni-bodies from aluminum in empty buildings. You don't do 200,000 units overnight. How many companies started as small specialty outfits? What are the demographics of potential buyers? Design a product people need and want that is a significant improvement over what is available. Vehicles are about convenience and lifestyle choices. There is a reason why mini-vans and Corollas are so popular. The streamlined e-bike may soon join the list as a cost effective commuter/recreational vehicle especially as more bus lines add bike racks to the buses. The three wheeled motorcycle/car concept keeps coming up but never seems to take hold, much like the flying car. A safe, warm, and comfortable scooter that gets 150 mpg makes the trikes obsolete.
