Engine build for MPG

After nearly 300k my 2001 Camry engine laid down. It was using oil. I was getting 45mpg total overall efficiency. I'm good at engine rebuilding. Well experienced anyway How should I rebuild the engine for Max MPG?

Wow!! it's not common to see 45mpg for a Camry. Any mod on this car ?

Drafting and 55MPH with 50# tire pressure and belly pan.
The scan-gauge shows 45mpg total fuel efficiency. Calculator at the pump 34mpg.

Well, anything that can be done to improve the volumetric efficiency of your engine should improve your fuel efficiency... I would start by raising your compression ratio, match it to the fuel you want... Lots of people can run engines in the 11:1 range on pump fuel(though 91 octane)... After that get some cams ground which move power lower in the rev range(lower lift and duration), and you might see about porting the head/intake manifold, though it might prove harmful to FE...

Then your getting 34mpg.

Not sure what screen "total fuel efficiency" is.

If your scan gauge is properly adjusted, then your scan gauge mpg and hand calculated mpg will be within 10% of each other.

If you want to make a complete build out of this thing, toyo has smaller motors and manual transmissions

Heck someone got a prius motor (not the hybrid part) to run stand alone.

My brother and I test drove a 2007 Camry 4 cylinder, manual. I didn't know they were still making stick Camrys that generation. I have no doubt it could get your 34 mpg. It had 66k on it and was $9000. He ended up getting a 2013 Focus with a stick and 98k for $6700. I think that car could get the 45 mpg driven right, grill shutters, 2.0 direct injection, variable valve timing, etc. Anyway, I think you could rebuild the camry but anything different then stock is going to cost more then you ever get back. Get big gains by selling it and getting something more modern.

I was only measuring Highway MPG Not trying to cheat but that was the only way I could tweak the efficiency. I just started Hypermiling . I have a 2001 insight on the way. Which couldn't be soon enough with the camry down.
My V6 Escape suprised me today on my 180m commute it got 27.4mpg calculated at the pump. It has new Cooper AT3s "big tires" I had been getting 22mpg "tire pressure?" after the new tires. I was getting 26mpg on low test with the old tires. I added half a tank of Shell V-Power NiTRO+ Premium Gasoline and pumped up the tires to 44# from 30#. Wow what a difference the Shell made. If it continues I'll write a thread about the Shell V-Power .

Got it!!!!
I did the same w my 2002 Infiniti Q45S.
I did 40k a year on the road and wasn't really concerned about my intowm mpg. I adjusted the nut behind the wheel, but didn't try to measure it.
But on the highway, I was all about mpg.
Belly pan, taller tires, driving 60mph.
THe only thing I would sacrifice was the a/c!!

I think you question deserves an answer:

• Blueprinted for clearances and balance.
• Wear surfaces cryogenically tempered prior to machining.
• Exterior surface with heat-rejecting aerospace coatings.
• Combustion chamber surfaces (head, cylinder valve heads.) coated with ceramic heat-proof coatings.
• Piston skirts, rings and bearings with low-friction aerospace coatings.
• Anti-reversionary headers and everything everyone else has suggested.

You can price that all out, calculate the ROI and have a sad.
