The bottom line is he can mod that thing, pour hundreds of dollars into it with "efi upgrades" and "tunes" and aerocaps and what not, the reality is it's a large thirsty beast and he ain't likely to break 20 mpg at all, and if by some small miracle he does, it will be juuuuuust barely.

Right If I can get around 20 or even 18mpg Ill be using alot less gas than at 11. Im not going to touch the engine or computer though.

Ah, youth, where they don't yet know that the laws of physics apply to them too. Yes, I remember those days.
P.S. 11 to 18 is a 64% increase.
11 to 20 is an 82% increase...

What law of physics says you can't get 20 mpg out of a V8 4x4 pickup? I must have missed those classes.
I wasn't implying that 20 mpg is easy. I was implying that it's possible. And an 82% increase is going to take lots of work, but quite a few folks on this site run >80% over EPA.
Steven, here's a lesson for you (if you haven't already learned it): When somebody tells you that you can't do something take it as a challenge!

Well, at least find out what the air/fuel ratios are and the timing protocols since they do have a great effect on mpg.

If you applied that same 80% over EPA to a 35mpg rated car he'd be getting over 60 mpg instead of 20 mpg. The money savings from going to a car is huge. He already said he doesn't need a truck. The truck simply doesn't make any sense to modify, especially since he will have two of them.

If you want to do it as a hobby, go ahead. It's not impossible.
But given the choices, I'd sleep on the bus and use the 16$ a day in gas I save and buy lots of beer.
