I was thinking something subdued like that, but the easy way out would be to just top-coat the nose the right color.

Ain't it the same Alabaster Beige (Bege Alabastro) of some Brazilian Volkswagens?

The authoritative system is the L-codes. According to:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives...codestype1.php- Kansas Beige is L91D
- Shantung [Yellow/Gold] is L12D
- Alabaster Grey is L473
Possibly a name change with the language. You'll see from the chart it is a beigey gray, ligthter than the former two.

Found this:

This example was reportedly originally finished in Jade Green and wears an older repaint resembling Alabaster Gray.

Bingo! In a colour palette dominated by black and dark greys, one of the first VW white available was Ivory
Quote:
(L 62) which was available at the start of the ’50s, firstly on VW Buses. Pearl White (L 87) followed from 1957 (below) and Parchment White (L 81) came along soon after. L 473 Alabaster arrived in 1957 and was only available on the Beetle Convertible initially, followed by Alaska White (L10017) in 1960. Pearl White always looked great with Clay Beige wheel centres and Pearl White rims. It would remain available on most models right through until 1967.

Hmm the rust on that one bug looks artificially induced.
Seems to be missing on the venting grills, where I usually found it to happen first

You're right, you have to think like rust.

Not sure I can think that deeply, but I did notice that I didn't see rust in the typical places it starts on the VW's I owned.

This is may be one of the best I've seen.
https://www.vonskip.com/2012/03/bel-air-patina_28.html
I'd saved out another picture I can't currently find as an example. I recall it as a Bel Air, I may be mistaken. This ad just calls it 'outstanding'. The paint is worn down, not ground down.
Some things just make sense, like vertical streaks below badges and door handles.

I picked this thread so cRiPpLe_rOoStEr will see it.
It's got two Beetle pistons and cylinders. And like any good locomotive an oil squirt can.
