Steam could eventually be viable to power the on-board generator in a hybrid vehicle, yet I won't hold my breath for it being easy to convince the average Joe to give it a try, and it would be better to have a steam engine with a condenser to improve efficiency.

Sometimes it's just a paintjob done in a way that looks like rust, without actual rust at all.

That's exactly my comment. I don't understand the concept: spending huge amounts of time or money to make something look like that: uncared for. I got that on the ranger, naturally and i hate it.

Some days ago I was lurking about a mesh-wire enclosure to keep the rear engine of a Baja Bug out of reach for unauthorized access. So, would making a front-engined 4WD Bug make more sense instead?

Correct me here, but isn't the baja concept to not impede access to the motor and drivetrain? I have seen stocker class bugs but they are not as capable as a cut and chopped baja. A cage concept might be interesting.
However in some neighborhoods, there is nothing much to stop an entire engine theft.
Urban legends in LA say you could yank an engine during a long stop light of 3 minutes.

Rumor has it that SCAT ( https://scatvw.com) took their name from 'Southern California Auto Thieves'.

Even if the entire engine wouldn't be stolen, there is the risk of some random SOB pulling a spark plug cable out, or damaging a distributor. And who knows when a kid or a stray dog may come out of nowhere and placing a hand in the accessory belt when out of the sight of the driver...

I have recently seen a '71 Beetle which had been a taxi in my hometown. It even featured the rope used for closing the passenger door from the driver seat, and the front passenger seat had been removed as it was the usual back in the day.
