I expect 48v system to become standard equipment shortly.

The difference is that with 48v you can run the A/C while the engine is off. It makes stop/start technology much more effective. Lower weight is another andvantage as is smaller diameter wires.

It does surprise me that 24-volt system usually fitted to trucks was seemingly never even tried in a car (assumig that trucks and SUVs don't count as a car), so even though the 48-volt is in fact promising sometimes it sounds like jumping a few steps.

It's not actually impossible to run the A/C with 12-volt or 24-volt, there are even some aftermarket all-electric A/C kits originally meant for big rigs.

GM joins the game - but...

A source somewhat close to the heart of a big new development at GM has informed CleanTechnica that GM is indeed working on an electric pickup truck, and it is based around a Tesla powertrain. As in, the majority of the guts of the truck will be made by Tesla.
Seems like a smarter thing to do than to develop an electric truck all on their own only to find it isn't competitive, analog to what these guys did.

It definitely wouldn't be a partnership. Well, maybe we'll find out what was up with this someday.

Decades ago the trade rags talked up these 48-V systems.
The advantage would be in current reduction, reducing wire size 4X,weight-savings,and they'd throw in multiplexing of signals off of a power bus, which I believe is done presently.
