I'm very liberty-minded. That said, it undermines gun rights when these high-profile school shootings by children are seemingly commonplace. Whenever someone uses the "think about the children" argument, all reason goes out the window.

We require people to pass a written and skills test to drive vehicles because they are extremely dangerous when used improperly. Likewise, I find it reasonable to require the same for first time gun owners. Perhaps a portion of the very reasonably priced licensing fee should also go towards a trigger lock. The owner could use it or not. Ideally firearms would be stored in a combination safe.

That won't prevent bad people from behaving badly, but sends the message that we take gun ownership seriously. Who knows if this would significantly reduce the number of kids that accidentally shoot themselves, purposely kill themselves, or purposely kill others, but it seems to me our streets are safer by requiring a certain skill level to drive. Otherwise, we would just get rid of the DMV altogether.

Regarding people always being able to produce their own weapons; that's true, but most people are lazy. If they have to go through some extra effort then they probably won't do it.

I've been tempted to invest in firearms before since it seems like prices would be easier to predict than the stock market. When nobody is talking about guns, you buy. When people are talking about gun control, sell.

Reminds me of this- Warning, there is an F-bomb dropped here.

Concerning the consequences of EVs gaining popularity; they are mostly positive. With people charging over night, it will bring the off-peak energy requirements up; which will tend to make energy cheaper. The closer peak and off-peak consumption are, the less expensive the energy due to the lower reliance on peaking generators.
I hadn't thought of EVs charging overnight, but that makes a ton of sense. I wonder how solar will fare, even with solar thermal able to provide usable power for hours after the sun sets. Something has to base load and peak.

The nuclear power comments stem from a piece I read in The Economist years ago. They rarely let me down.

Vehicles kill more people than all firearm deaths.
Written tests, drivers test, insurance, registration, constant policing, inspection, taxation, speed limits, weight limits, passenger limits all still can't fix stupid.

Plus the Democrats have no interest in passing gun control. They had the super majority from 2008 to 2010 and wouldn't even mention it. A few people would bring it up occasionally and the bulk of the Congress men would be like "gun control? What's that? Never heard of it."
They only time they seem serious about it is when they are the house or senate minority.

Plus if people really cared about saving kids then pools and hot tubs would be banned, all passage vehicles would have had mandated reverse cameras since the 1990s and no electrical outlets would be permitted below 60 inches in residences (this is electrical code for commercial "day cares" and child care centers).
But only the relatively small number of gun deaths matter for some reason.

Plus which, a distributed array of charging vehicles can be used to buffer highs and lows on a microsecond basis.

Black rifles! I love you guys!

I believe that people would consider me a monster if I tried to create a process where people need to earn a license to have kids. It seems inhumane to deny people the right to have kids they cannot support.

I have always considered myself poor (and not particularly happy), but I have been in many homes that made mine look amazing.

Then again, we find the time and money to fix things that break.

When I drove a school bus we had expensively-dressed kids with iPods walking out of shacks with new cars in front.

Priorities.

We had a financial briefing at Fort Lee where they asked what shouldn't be bought on credit. My roommate shouted "Weapons!" and everyone laughed.

Had to be there?

I figure forced sterilization for drug abusers and child abusers would be a good start.

If you feel like you aren't getting ahead you are absolutely right.

I keep blowing all my money left over at the end of the month on hookers, cocane and booze. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Nearly the same here, even though sometimes it's some riced-out jalopy instead of a new econobox, but their owners are often too proud of those pieces of crap they drive even though they hide... err... live in places dominated by drug dealer gangs and with sewage running through the sidewalk.
