I meant the Road&Track article, obviously...

There's no problem, really. If Nissan is right, this engine will be much smoother than any four-cylinder turbo thanks to the connecting rods remaining more upright throughout their stroke, with a torque curve very similar to what you'd see from a diesel. Therefore, Infiniti believes it's the perfect engine to replace its current lineup of V6s.
More parts per cylinder, but less cylinders without losing the smoothness.
Less sideways forces so less friction on the cylinder walls. And so on.

This goes so much further than just adding a wastegate on a turbo.

I'm still hoping for the Scuderi split-cycle engine:

if the compression ratios can go upto 14:1 i think there will be some good increase in fuel efficency than gdi turbo engines.

Since not even the real Atkinson cycle (not that valve timing trick) achieved the mainstream automotive market, I wouldn't hold my breath for this variable-compression engine. Scuderi cycle sounds interesting in theory too, but is just another of those "revolutionary" developments that don't seem any likely to be finally released on the market...

It's good that you said it's almost ready for production. Almost... In regard to the Atkinson cycle, it's also not just a theory and had been produced commercially before even though it still caters mostly to stationary appliances such as that co-generation set that Honda sells in Japan. Anyway, I wouldn't really hold my breath for a variable-compression engine because it's just cheaper to emulate that with a turbo (or a "twincharger" setup) which wouldn't require so much more tooling and machining neither increase the moving parts count. Not meaning that I don't believe it could ever reach the market at all.
