Yeah, that was my point: you can get any stupid correlation you want, if you carefully select the data - as for instance choosing exactly who you'll define as a 'pirate' - to produce the results you want.

I remember an episode of "Square One" where the team on Mathnet investigated claims that eating chuckberries caused acne and determined that the chuckberry eaters were teenage boys while the control group was old people.

That is what you are saying, right?

I'm not sure if that is exactly what jamesqf is saying, but that is what my guest speaker was saying. He was showing that even though there is a correlation, doesn't mean that one affects the other or vice-versa. He also talked about randomizing things, so you don't get mistakes like that. Both groups should have been mixed with old and young people.

It sounds to me like your scenario was more of a mistake, where as my scenario has 'rules' about who a pirate is, which is more of what he was alluding to, I think.

Actually, it is no mistake. The origins of that graph are from a school kid in Kansas who was protesting the teaching of "intelligent design" and even blossomed into "talk like a pirate day"! (my favorite holiday apart from towel day).

Correlation != causation, we are here and that is about all we can say about it with any authority.

Since the OP has trolled the bait through our pond, we now know where it originated. Thanks for exposing the bait.

Also: I didn't think pirates obeyed any rules. If they did, they weren't really pirates...

BTW, when is "towel day? Maybe I could appreciate it and celebrate it.

I think you guys might have misunderstood me. Neither scenario (mine or the one Xist offered) was a mistake in the fact that we brought either one to the table, nor the information presented was a mistake. The scenario that Xist brought up had a mistake by the investigators. That is what I was talking about. They should have randomized the people in the groups to eliminate any errors in data.

The 'rules' I was alluding to had nothing to do with pirate's actions. The rule was whatever rule the original creator (Bobby Henderson) of the graph used to determine what a 'pirate' is, which determined how many there actually are.
