Perihelion 2014
Happy Perihelion Day!
Also, around this time of January is when we see the latest sunrise in the northern hemisphere. Might even be tomorrow -- I forget. (I was surprised to learn a few years ago that the days with the latest sunrise & earliest sunset aren't on the winter solstice.)
So we're well and truly on our way out of winter! That's how I like to see it, anyway.
Now to do some shoveling and skating on the river...

It's been a horrible few months of winter so far..
Not that we've had a lot of deep snow, it's the lack of sunshine that spoils the winter for me..
Check out the solar gain from a house down the road..
https://enlighten.enphaseenergy.com/...ems/R7wQ304012
The last few months have been partly cloudy, or completely over-cast..
Normally on the Solstice, I go out and take a picture of the long shadows.
Shadows are in short supply this year..

Xringer - I know exactly what you mean.
I have a pack of junk batteries & a few panels on my garage, and for the first time in 4 years had to run a generator this month.
At least it hasn't been brutally cold so far this winter!
PS: December doesn't look pretty, but February 2014 looked horrible in that solar gain graph!

I think they must have gone to Tampa during February and shut down the system before leaving..
Or, it was just broken down and they didn't notice..?.
Here's a house just up the road and they did okay last Feb..

Happy winter solstice!
Down here in the "dirty south" I am still BBQing this time of year. Cooked up some fajita marinada just the other day!

Tyler?? Isn't that in Louisiana? LOL!!
When I was a kid down in Del Rio, we used call anyone north of San Antone, a danged Yankee..
Please don't talk about 'fajita marinada', because I just had a store-made chicken salad sandwich.. Gag, gag..

Tyler is a bit more like Louisiana than Texas now that you mention it...
...sorry bout the sandwich. You just can't trust that store bought stuff!
We do a lot of cooking...food is amazing.

I grill all year round, up here in New England. A hot charcoal fire is a great thing in the cold of winter. I have grilled standing on 16-18" of snow and ice next to my grill.
The winter solstice is my daughter's half birthday, so we celebrated that, as well.
