The EPA test do not always tell the whole story. The VW TDI also suffers from a unrealistically low EPA rating. I will wait for people to actually drive this car and report on its fuel economy before I say it is disapointing.

I agree. It needs to be put in the hands of a real Hypermiler like Wayne Gerdes. I wonder if the hybrid drivetrain will allow for EOC.
I showed it to my wife last night. She loves it. This could be the first car that makes her *want* to learn to drive stick.

I'll be surprised if they sell very many of these. Honda hasn't had much luck with with the "sporty" IMA hybrid idea.

Yeah, but I think this leverages the tuner culture behind the CRX. The tuner culture didn't want a "sporty" Accord hybrid.

From the replies on the jalopnik site, they don't like it either. Its too heavy and not enough horsepower (as if there ever is for them).

Yeah, Jalopnik is the "performance fascist" website of choice.
Personally, I think the CR-Z is great. It's just a shame that I won't be remotely in a position to buy one when it's released because otherwise I'd be very interested. The styling is spot on, and the performance would be enough to keep me happy (the reported figures are more or less what my MX-5 gets and I'm plenty happy with that).
Weight could be a little less and economy perhaps a little better, but as has been mentioned, we'll just have to wait until a few hypermilers get their hands on it to see what it's capable of. The city estimates certainly don't sound too shabby, and it's interesting to see that the CVT version gets better economy than the manual - though I expect for Joe Public and their general inability to make the most of a manual gearbox, the CVT would be the better option. I suspect CVT will be the high seller (even in the UK, unless they charge more for it) and there'll be sales at both ends of the performance and economy scale for those who prefer manual.

How do the horsepower and 0-60 / 1/4 mile times compare ?
This car is meant to appeal to the racer crowd and give hybrids a broader appeal by making them 'cool' in the eyes of the average Joe.
( Or so I would think. )

[QUOTE=NeilBlanchard;153664]Nah, it's pretty much a Kamm back:

Thanks Neil ! I searched for images of the production version, but didn't see these.
I see a diamond in the rough with this car. The rounded butt could use a good trip stip down the side, the underbelly needs a 'pan, the wheels wellls could use skirts/pants , and the fake brake vents could be plugged ( most likely they already are .)
I still think the angle seems way too high.
Shouldn't it slope down at 15* ?

Those economy numbers bore and disappoint me.
Try again, Honda, or die. Whichever.

It looks okay to me. Besides, higher angles are achievable if the transition is gradual.

Excuse me while I get offended at that. I believe the CR-Z would be a big economy improvement for you.
It's true, they haven't produced a hyper-MPG hybrid since 2006, but give them some credit. They produce vehicles in the countries where they are sold. They're advancing manufacturing, automotive, and robotics technology. Their emissions and economy is mostly class-leading. And when the CEO says, "But we are Honda! We must have a manual!", he earns points from me.
No, I want Honda to thrive. Even if their product portfolio for 2010-2013 has nothing that wows me.
