Jim: congrats on the win for "modification of the year, 2010". ( http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...0-a-15900.html )
That's much deserved recognition from the membership for a well-researched, well-documented, well-executed project.
Your prize? (Aside from the adoration of your peers?) An EcoModder decal! Please PM me your mailing address.

Congratulations Jim! I'm assuming that your project will be featured on the EM main page and the blog, too. :-)

Hi Neil,
It's always nice to hear from you.
I am feeling a little choked up right now by everyone's positive comments, and I really appreciate it.
You already know that the Insight Tail project would never have happened if it wasn't for all the input from others like yourself that goes on a EcoModder.
This community is the sum of everyone's contributions and the Insight Tail is just a small part of the overall energy that goes into EM.
Thanks again to everyone who voted for 2010 and to all the other entrants for your inspiring projects.
Jim.

Hi, Jim. Congratulations on the win and the great-looking tail.
Having driven in the snow for half of a winter now, how do you feel about your departure angle? Would a tail that's lower to the ground scrape or otherwise get in the way? Have you ever bottomed yours out?

Hi Matt,
The angle on top of the car *may* be too steep, but I would like to tuft test it when the weather is warmer. Same for the sides. We already know that the bottom portion is too steep.
On the apron of my driveway there is about six inches of clearance, but I know several driveways in our town that we walk past, that could cause the tail to scrape.
I have not bottomed out yet, but there are piles of snow that could easily be backed into at work if one is not careful with the car in reverse.
Speaking of departure angle, did you see the updated Streamlining Template that Aerohead posted recently? Looks very nice!
Jim.

Yes, it's a beautiful drawing, and it's what got me thinking about departure angles. Winter has a way of making streets narrower, parking spaces shorter, and roads much more uneven.
If the top and sides are a continuation of the existing curvature, tufts should be minimally agitated. It's the transition from top to side that should be interesting.
As MetroMPG said last April, "First one to post video of tuft testing an Insight boat tail wins!". Well, you've got Mod of the Year, and maybe you can go after the prize for that less-well-publicized contest too.

Hi , 3-Wheeler
Congrats on a fantastic project. In a previous post I think you said you used mostly 6 oz cloth. I was wondering how many layers of 6 oz. on the outside. I am planing a project of my own and was thinking 3 layers of 6 oz. on the outside and maybe just 1 or possibly 2 layers on the inside. Any suggestions ?
