Ah yes, this sounds like my morning commute. Every day it's ownage.

My optimal acceleration is actually a little quicker than most traffic (maintaining 1800-2200rpm and certain throttle position), so I usually pull ahead of the traffic... then I coast down to the next red lights, usually slowing down early so I am still rolling when it goes green.

I usually collect several tailgaters along the way, who, despite all the impatient driving they don't get anywhere quicker (thwarted by the design of traffic light phasing which is kind of designed against cheaters).

I love stories like this, as they happen to me all the time. I don't feel alone!

The worst reactions I get are when I'm the front man at the stop light and I take off extremely slowly, and sometimes the person behind me almost hits my rear because they rabbit start and then suddenly realize I'm not, and you see them getting all confused and pissed off, waving arms and throwing "WTF?" hand signals.

I should learn that "WTF?" hand signal. Unless you are going to have to stop again anyway, slow acceleration does not save you anything as long as you don't get the injectors into open loop, at around 80% throttle opening. It shows up badly on instant fuel economy guages because they are not smart enough to take momentum and elevation into account as assets.

The one that really gets me is the jacked up 4wd trucks with 35in tires doing 80mph on the freeway...and if you can't see them coming you can hear them with those exhaust pipes big enough to stick your whole head in...or maybe that's the sound of gas being sucked out of their tanks!

I love that my jacked up 4x4 on 34" tires can easily hold 80.
