Red face Hypermiling saved me hundreds in one day!

Hi Ecomodders!
So you are probably wondering how you could save hundreds in one day, simply by modifying you're driving style? Well I will tell you! First off I am 20 years old and as do most 20 year olds I enjoy the right pedal more than the left...if you know what I mean LOL So before I started hypermiling there was this nice straight stretch of road that almost every time I would drive down I would mash the gas a just have fun pulling to 80-90 mph. So yesterday I was driving home after going to some friends house, and I turned onto this same piece of highway and slowly accelerated to 52 (speed limit is 55) Well this old habit came into the back of my mind and I started thinking about pulling 3rd gear to 6000 rpm just for giggles...and then I thought...I have been driving smart for 20 minutes and I don't want to mess up my trip FE so I decided to cool it and just DWL down the highway.....right after I decided to cool it....a cop car passed me in the left lane....:0 If I had punched it I would not only have gotten the ticket...I would have felt so stupid.
Thanks to Ecomodder i still have a perfect driving record! Thanks all!

If I'm not mistaken, that's a honda Odyssey, have you ever punched it in a honda Odyssey? You can squelch the tires, it's a blast to drive haha. My parents had one for a while, and everytime I got in it, I always smashed it. The vtec on that van is something else.

I keep saying this in other places, and it continues to fall on deaf ears because of our "personal liberties" national culture. Just because you are free to make choices doesn't mean you should make some of those choices.

You're free to choose to drive as fast as you want, but at no point do you get to escape (unless no cop was watching) the consequences for disregarding the speed limits. There are hundreds of other drivers on the roads, the vast majority of them are just trying to get somewhere with no drama. Imagine some grandma tooling down the road at 5-under when suddenly some big Odyssey goes wailing by at Warp Factor Three. You might startle her into an unintentional lane change or something. Even if you're halfway into the next county by the time her fender hits the guardrail, that's actually an accident you caused.

I keep saying, leave behavior like that on the track. That's the only place it ever belongs. Having a vehicle that will do 160mph is not permission to drive that fast on public roads. So much more important than "you're not supposed to," you could cause someone else to get hurt, which is utterly inexcusable.

In the meantime, congrats on the discovery of the other, more immediate economies of hypermiling.

Disagree.

If grandma can't handle a surprise while driving, she should hang up her license. Her car has mirrors, she should be paying attention if there's someone coming up behind her. Could just as easily be an emergency vehicle or wildlife wandering onto the road etc.

It cost me!

Ecomodding cost me,once:

I took my front plate off to put the grille block on the Firefly, and somehow I misplaced the plate. Or it fell off. (I'll never know.)

Anyway, I never got around to getting a new set until after I was stopped in a routine traffic check (looking for impaired drivers) and got a ticket for it.

If I remember, it was about $125.

So, it's grandmas fault that some maniac is coming upon her rear end at twice the speed limit. Lets just list the things that can go wrong with that scenario.

But no we just blame it on an older driver, no matter what the circumstances.

This thread and the one about the timing belt snafu with all the negative generalizations and astounding assumptions about all mechanics makes me wonder why I bother to try to help people on this forum, for 5 years and several thousand posts.

Pitiful
