pre-welding hiatus
I don't think I need to cut out & replace whole sections of floor. I'll just patch it up.
I'll probably start a dedicated thread like the one documenting the rust repair on my 2004 Echo winter beater. More useful to people who are searching on the topic.
The floor is the last thing that needs doing before getting the car inspected & licenced.
BUT!
I think I've done all I'm going to do on the MPGiata for a little while. I don't intend to drive the car until later in the summer, and I've got a pile of other projects on my plate.
So a little hiatus for now.

What are you using to retune?
It's an interesting thing, the tuning of that motor. Friends with the Familia 1.6 of the same vintage (same engine, right? Just some hardware differences?) had the same economy issues back in the day. The engines were tuned way too conservatively, and on track days, the 1.6 guys were getting WORSE economy than I was with the Protege 2.0 engine!
Reportedly, Japanese Mazdaspeed ECUs run leaner... but still get terrible economy.

fist take a look at the sparks. the blacker they are, the weaker is the lambda maybe. this is important fpr FE.
if everything is ok so far, open the black lid over the air flow meter. u will see the spiral spring. and under the stuff a saw blade like gear. release the hook holding it and tigten the spring. so it will signal less air and the injection will add less fuel.
if u wanna be sure, connect a cheap AFR gauge onto the lambdasonde. in open loop it will show what happens. even a simple voltmeter will show u whats going on...

Not too scary. Scary is do a Google Image search on "Miata rust".
I need to gut and rebuild another wing of my mansion. That and a dozen other things. But it probably won't be months before I get the welder out.

Mansion?
And by "wing", you mean "Bat-cave", right?

How many Bat-caves does a Metro need?
Is that where you plan on storing your fleet of Metros? Why not call it Metro City?
I still need to build the first wing of my mansion...

Damn, gotta keep an eye on the sky now or I might miss the beam projecting the green wrench sign when some cruel villain is revving his V8 just for fun or such.

Whoops! Time flies, doesn't it?
I fired up the MPGiata today and moved it in preparation for starting the floor repairs this weekend.
