Okay the reason that I was asking Is is was going to look and see if I could find an equivalent ECU that I could try reading to get some info on the EGR programing from. Unfortunately the program I use does not support the Aveo as of not (hptuners) if you can find a place that has tuning software with support for the Aveo or can chip it they might be able to give you the EGR parameters that are mapped.

Interesting idea. However, I am unaware of any place that deals in Aveo ECU reprogramming.

So, what do you think of the Aveo? Of the rental models driven, I liked the simplicity, tossable handling, and low-cost operation.
The iron block and tall highway gearing (auto) made the FE less than ideal. Any plans to lighten the load?
If you need to find more parts, you might find some T200/250 models as the Pontiac Wave and Suziki Swift+ in Canada...or the "Reasonably Priced" Chevy Lacettis from Top Gear
Keep us updated

Well, my 05 Aveo is in need of some TLC. It has 108k miles on it and wasn't properly taken care for at all. I have a random misfire code and the front struts are loose at the top mount. That stuff plus there are a few other things I didn't like. The handling isn't that great (in 06 they revised the suspension), shifter is really sloppy, power steering is very light giving horrible road feel, gas & brake pedal don't have much feel. Basically the whole car needs to be tighter. Everything is loose and sloppy feeling.
I have yet to run a full tank of gas through it, but I'm hoping to eek out 40 mpg without any serious hypermiling (no P&G and no EOC). If I can't achieve that I'll be disappointed. However, with the misfire code its not going into closed loop so I don't even know if its using any EGR at this point. Still working on getting it running smooth.

It sounds like a good challenge. From the pic, the condition of the car looks pretty good -- too bad it feels worn out. Looking back, I drove and reviewed the 2006 at the other place, so the suspension was updated.
So, I have to ask -- did you look for one, or come across a good deal?

I just thought if you want to tighten up the handling try getting some urethane brushing and replace them this should be firmer than the factory parts and not cost to much.

Well, I found out why the suspension is so clunky. The front strut mounts look like this:
And they are supposed to look like this:
Alas, this is off topic, so lets get back to EGR stuff. Soon I will be throwing a voltmeter on the EGR leads to watch how the EGR valve is used in normal driving.

couple of things to watch for: 1) if you have too much egr gas go into your cylinders you can create dead spots in the combustion chambers which will cause raw fuel to go to your catalitic converter. 2)if you have one that sticks wide open when you hit idle you will be lucky to keep the engine running. 3) now for a possible retro part--older gm cars(pre-odbII cars) had vacuum controlled egr valves, i am thinking that you could control that style valve pretty easily. the problem would be porting into your intake, the gases going in are kind of hot, especially if you have a composit intake, GM ran a coolant line by where the gases came into the 3.8L engines. another thing to watch for is that you want the gasses to come into the intake as close to the throttle plate as you can as the need to mix well so they all don't go into just one cylinder causing a mis-fire.

How's it going?
I got this idea for increasing EGR flow while researching the workings of PSA's intercooler bypass valve. Apparently, partially blocking the engine's intake will improve EGR. I guess this is because lower intake pressure allows the cylinder to suck more exhaust gasses (as long as the EGR valve is open). So my guess is that if controlling how long the EGR valve is open is not possible, then maybe it'd be possible to make a device that restricts intake, actuated whenever the EGR valve is open?
