Punching through 1/8th inch steel would require a backing die to get a shearing action. But you've probably just figured that out.

What kind of a welder made the hole too big? If it is oxy-acetylene a smaller tip might help.

I haven't tried it yet. need some cut-off wheels that i'll get on the way home to finish cutting the blanks.
MIG is what I used. steel wire. always was told in order to weld steel to stainless, an SS rod was needed but I have welded the 2 just fine using steel wire and gas. weird how the pool of molten metal jumped across the steel table I had it on. stayed a big ball until it hit the floor. left a trail of soot where it touched.

this is what I figured out:
a deep socket, bench vise, punch ground to a point, hammer = nicely punched holes!

I did get the other discs cut out so I'll true them, punch holes and make brackets.

finished the mounts and discs. mounted them after spending 2 days finishing them. sanded with 120 grit on the DA. turned out good, considering all I paid was time. all stainless so no rust.
