The template is correct for all speeds up to about 250mph.

This is the actual i-MiEV :
It'll fit the template far better, up to it's cut-off vertical tail.
More pics here if that's not suitable for templating.
(Alternatively use Peugeot iOn / Cotroen C-zero images)

Yep, true, and it's one of this website's advertisers as well, been to the website just a few weeks ago.
This is an interesting photo, the article is in Dutch but the Google Chrome browser will translate it for you.

Changes from the Japanese model going on sale this summer include widened front and rear tracks and increased overhangs at the front and rear, to help bring the car into compliance with European pedestrian-protection regulations

Right, these are different models based on the same platform. To bad they don't go to a front wheel drive arrangement for the electric drivetrain.

If they made the windshield fit the template in the front we'd be talking big bucks, but from the roof high point back it looks like they could have done way better. Conforming to the template it would have a very similar shape as a Pruis in that back area. Maybe that's why they didn't do. Sorry, just thinking out loud.

I will bet you all three of my Hot Wheels AMC Javelins that it was done purely for styling.
I saw this at a recent autocross. Is there any advantage to putting the spoiler directly behind the window as opposed to on the trailing edge of the trunk?

From here Renault Eve, same idea (and timeframe) as the Peugeot VERA.
Quote:
1981 came EVE, the economy project car. Eve was a prototype based on the R18. The first phase of its programme was to concentrate on better aerodynamics and on the use of advanced electronics to control engine and transmission, the power pack and final drive being left as standard initially. Having an all-up weight comparable with that of the R18TL, it had a lower-drag body shape to give a drag coefficient of 0.239-43 per cent better than that of the average European car. Good performance was achieved with a smaller engine, the EVE version of the 18 having a 5TL engine of 1,100cc.

If it had smooth wheel covers...? Someone else mentioned stretched tires, but flush wheel fitment and lowered suspension would take it even further. It's what people in the modified car scene call "stanced" or "hellaflush".
(The Nissan above is specifically a VIP or Bippu styled car- see also shakotan and bosozoku)
Some more stanced cars.

I must add that while low cars look really cool one must use caution during snowstorms
