This.
I don't drive a Prius. My goals with my car choice were: hatchback with good cargo space (excludes fiesta), good mileage, reliable. I could have bought a Prius, or my Fit. Since I'm willing and able to push the Fit to 60+ mpg, a Prius doesn't offer me much. Even at a potential 100 mpg, the big savings are already behind me at 60.
When I was shopping, a Prius of equivalent age and mileage was about $3000 more than the Fit. At 10,000 miles a year, $3.50 gas, 60 mpg vs 100 mpg, I'd save $230 a year. It would be 13 years before the Prius paid off its higher price for me.
Also, driving dynamics. Fit and Fiesta beat Prius.

Seems like the Fiesta is a more reasonable option if you do mostly highway commuting, while the Prius could give you some long-term savings if your driving was mostly inner-city. Not sure about how long you'd keep the same car to justify the extra expense anyway...

One day I'd like to own a cheap used Prius for a while because they're geek parties on wheels. Rolling video games. EV mode is cool. And they're mucho fun to eco-pilot and get silly mileage numbers. The concept of a PHEV conversion is neat, too.
Not because getting one will save me any money. (I doubt I'll lose any money on it though.)
Last week I briefly considered a 1st gen Prius listed for $1k asking (worn out battery)... it sold before I could consider it further.
You don't buy new cars to save money.

It seems like Prii really only make sense for taxi and other delivery drivers.

They make a lot of sense for most people who aren't members here.

...there's ALSO the non-hypermiler aspect of one's 'significant other' being able to get 42-51 mpg -- in city driving -- where before she only got 27-29 mpg in the Cruze!

My wife is cool with me driving 50-55 long distances, and coasting to red lights...But when she's in the driver seat, it's facepalm city!
My dream car right now is a Fiesta 1L 3cyl Ecoboost.

HUMOR!
Those aren't "facepalms," they're people swatting flies & gnats on their foreheads (wink, wink)!

My dad is worse. When I drive and he is in the car, if I don't go fast enough, he will reach over and shove my foot into the accelerator holding it down lol! I do 75-80mph and he says "your not going fast enough!" Wtf!
When we are in my car it's a different story. I drive 55-65mph and if he complains, I tell him he can always get out! Lol!
