Quite a lot of the time the front wheels go up into the footwell too.

Special case if you have to drive a bigger vehicle for safety reasons you have to, but you can still maximize fuel. The problem is that people that are 6' and shorter and feel the necessity to compensate for something...fact is if you can safely fit in a smaller vehicle say a sedan for example and have no need for a big vehicle why do it?

FTFY.
5'6", love me some low cars, everything is more exciting for a given speed.
30MPH in a gokart feels like 80 in the average car.

Find the smallest 4 passenger car you can, remove the front seat, and drive from the back.
I just spoke with a coworker that is your height and asked him which car has enough room. His answer; get a VW Beetle. Don't they offer 'em with the TDI diesel engine now days? That would be one way to get enough room and have a fuel efficient car. He currently drives a Hyundai Elantra and says it has enough room, just barely.

insurance
something to consider also is the cost of insurance.
A new car is going to cost a lot more per month in auto insurance than a beat up old car.
Even a new used car thats a of a newer model year will cost more.
Example - you can insure a 90s car for around 44$ a month, or a 2000s car for about 70$ a month (atleast thats the quotes i got)
So your best bet, is to find a jalopy with good aero for cheap, convert it to diesel, and end up with a car with the least overall cost.

uhh.... while my dads truck was broke down, he was cutting wood and hauling it on a 6ft flatbed trailer with my moms vibe. surprisingly, it handled it well.

i have recently been weighing the option of getting a different vehicle, but at $10,000 even if i get 75mpg, it would cost more than driving my intrepid at 28mpg.

Sure. The question is whether the larger vehicles have all that much more passenger room. My (admittedly limited) experience is that they don't have a lot more head or leg room, though they might have more width. But often enough the extra width is devoted to a wider console & bigger cupholders.

Duh! The point of the exercise is to sell the guzzler for more than you pay for the gas sipper that you replace it with, as for example you sell the Intrepid for $7500 and buy an Insight for $5000.
