Instead of lowering it, My suggestion is to put air suspension on it/under it. For highway cruising you could drop it to a low ride height, two inches from the ground.
For that gravel rutted back road to the lake you can pump it up 6 inches. I so want a air system for my N. Beetle, one day.

Trouble with that is that any major change in ride height on most production suspension will give unfavourable changes in wheel alignment/geometry. Anything with macpherson strut front suspension will certainly see huge changes in toe angle with any significant lowering, so on-the-fly ride height adjustment would lead to poor tyre wear, and an increase in rolling resistance. Otherwise that would be a pretty cool idea.

always need to get an alignment after ANY type of lowering......or you'll eat up the tires overriding any mpg gain.

If your not willing to do pizza pans there are rims that you can buy for any car that are not to bad on price and do the same concept as pizza pans but with a better look. I refuse to put pizza pans on as well which is why i looked up these styled rims.
