MAX torque at 800rpm?!?!
I was just told that the 300 I-6 develops MAX torque at 1200 rpm, with 10° timing. I have mine set to 14°, so that would make it roughly 800 rpm, right? No wonder it pulls so hard at idle! I can climb real hills at 35mph in 5th gear!!! If I try to go faster on a steep hill, it just slows to 35! A change of timing might be in order.....

I was told that each degree of advance moves the torque curve down ~100 rpm. Is this not right?
I was poking around on other forums and found the 1200 rpm statement for my engine. I have no idea which forum it was. I know it is nowhere near 2000 rpm.
I run out of torque fairly quickly compared to what I used to have before the timing change.

Those general rules of thumb tend to apply to things near the "average" of whatever group the rule of thumb is supposed to apply to. Yours sounds like it probably isn't near the average.
You may not have moved the torque band down at all, in fact. Only a dyno will tell you for certain. The same goes for cam timing, BTW.

Cam timing will affect your toque band.
Ignition timing will do little if nothing.

More ignition timing (up to the ideal point) generally equals more power at a given RPM, similar to more compression. Basically, it increases cylinder pressure when the plug fires. This can lead to a gain in low-end torque, but it shouldn't cause a loss of high rpm torque.
Advanced cam timing, however, moves the entire powerband down.

I set the timing back to 10° today and test drove....I lost a lot of my low-end torque. I used to be able to smoke the tires on the driveway in third from idle....not with 10° timing. It starts quicker, and seems to drive "easier". The computer advanced the timing a LOT more with the base set at 14° than at 10°. The comp advances the timing to ~26° with 14° timing and only 15° with 10°....anybody know why? Shouldn't it be linear? Maybe leave the spout connector plugged in and see what it does when I change it?
