I'm sure we have all seen older drivers whose driving .... ah ..... leaves something to be desired. At some point, those people no longer drive - and sometimes it takes the court to deliver the bad news.

I wonder if that is what is going on. (Yes, yes. I am aware that he is only in his late 50's, but is it so hard to imagine that he MIGHT have those same symptoms?)

I just drove on that road. I've never seen so much roadkill. He wasn't exaggerating on the "not wanting to hit critters" part of it. Perhaps if anyone else had any respect for wildlife the herd would be the ones slowing down instead of him speeding up.

Yep, you continue to tell us how intimately well you know that particular road in an effort to revive this thread. Undoubtedly you are an expert about that particular highway.

Unfortunately, highways are designed for motor vehicle traffic, not for the protection of "critters".

I suggest that you lobby your local politicians to reduce the speed limit to an absurdly low number and have them post critter crossings every few hundred feet. Then will you be satisfied?

It's much easier to be provocative by bringing up your defense of a lost cause relentlessly, than to actually make your wishes happen.

K, I'm gonna drive the minimum limit every single time now, no F's given. Just because he doesn't know how to argue a case doesn't mean I don't.

You don't say speed up for "safety" because of all the other hotheads out there, that doesn't fly with me. It is a matter of principle now, and thank you for helping my resolve.

If you can't avoid hitting someone doing the minimum speed limit then you should not be on the road.

You are correct in that highways are made for cars and not critters. One could get the speed limit reduced, or when visibility is reduced (such as at night when visibility is limited by the range of your headlights and the reflectivity of things in the night) one could slow down to a speed that lets you see and avoid things on the road. Or you could just plow on blissfully unaware of what is just out of view.

I've mentioned it exactly twice, and the last time contained a new observation.

Don't be daft. 55 is a plenty good speed limit in good conditions. Then again, conditions aren't always good. Statute and common sense allows for adjusting speed to prevailing conditions.

Statute requires motorists to drive at speeds that are safe for conditions. If the roads are thick with creatures it's prudent or maybe even legally required to drive at such a speed where avoidance is possible.

My wish isn't for a different speed limit or more signage. My wish is for you egomaniacs to realize the entire universe doesn't revolve around your desire to put the hammer down.
