Yeah, I wouldn't want to be going too fast at those temperatures. The heater will lose the battle to keep you warm.
I probably would have continued driving the car with the top down in even colder weather, but the vinyl top shrinks and it gets surprisingly hard to close again. Plus the folds in an old top are more prone to cracking in the cold.

Metro-MPG: Did you know that the car is supposed to be stored with the top UP? I read that storing it top down (like I was doing in my garage) can cause the top to shrink.

I think that you said you couldn't find Brake pad Drag Reduction clips for your Miata. I found them for $5/set of 4 at mossmiata.com

RoBoBob - I had read that somewhere.
I store mine with the top UP to make it slightly more difficult for the mice to get inside!

Out of storage... first mod of 2020
Self-explanatory photo set:
It's about a 1" drop front & rear.

Same mod I did on my 1952 Ford Victoria when I was in college. I also [temporarily] flopped the shackles on the rear leaves. That edumacating was hit or miss.

How far apart (time) were those pics taken? The first gif is messing with me (trees in the background).

Ha! The before/after pics are a couple of years apart... pretty funny spotting the differences with the AWOL trees (I count 5).
This part of the world has been hit hard by the emerald ash borer. 3 of the disappeared trees were ash. But the large trunk closest to the foreground was a gorgeous mature white pine... I think the widow who owns that place was encouraged by a shady (ha) tree service to take it down even though it looked healthy, and really posed little threat to property given our typical storm wind directions. Sad.

Yeah, I hear you!
From the reasearch I did, the concensus in the Miata world is not to chop springs. The spring perch design isn't as chop-friendly as the Metro's design (I am VERY pleased with the results on the Metro, with 50% more drop).
Thus a fairly conservative drop of ~1 inch on the Miata. I did it in 2 stages to ensure I didn't go too far on the first cut. The springs are still under compression (though not a lot) at the point of full suspension travel.
I haven't driven it much yet, but a quick spin didn't feel dramatically different.
