LED upgrade

Well, I priced out the sequential LED lamps and they were way out of price range! Each lamp is over $60.00 US and that it just too much. I did however purchase regular LED lamps for $16.00 each and installed them in the car. I also removed the front license plate mount and moved the plate flush with the grill block for better aerodynamics. I also removed that steel plate opposite from the cooling fan to get more airflow directly to the engine from the gap below the hood.

Here is the old setup with the standard lamps and license plate mount..........

Here is the new and improved version.................

These are extremely bright in the dark..........

(2) Trucklite "60 series" LED lamps = $32.00
(1) truck mudflap = $8.00
(2) 3 prong pigtails = $3.00

Total parts = $43.00
Labor time = 2 hours total

Johnny, What's the trucklite part # for the sequential lights? And do they make them in red?

The are known as "60 Series" lights and many styles dictate the last few numbers like "60280" for a part #. I will look in the catalog and get you part#s for all the ones I find for red.

hey Johnny, where did you buy em?

anyone know about load simulators so you could use LED's
as turnsignals and not get that super fast blinking result?

I got the LED lamps from Point Spring and Driveshaft Co. in Erie, PA. they specialize in heavy duty truck parts. My LED lamps do blink fast when using the turn signal, but I like it!

RacerX, the Sequential lamps are only available in amber.

I am thinking about adding some "hidden" lamps so the LED's do not blink so fast, but that would defeat the purpose of saving energy with LED's. I am also considering something totally off the wall. I was going to install some LED lamps behind the gap between the hood and bumper so an orange glow will be visible through there. This would be an appearance mod only.

My next aeromod planned in an underbelly pan. I would probably use truck mudflaps for this mod also. I like the strength of this material and it's also light weight. This would be beneficial in the winter months also.

JM, have you considered replacing the standard flasher with one of the electronic variety?
They don't care about bulb load. They are programmed to flash at a constant rate for the guys who have too many bulbs on circuit and a standard flasher will just remain on or flash too slowly. I have never tested one for a vehicle with too little load but I am certain it would continue to flash constant. I have one in my Geo and it stayed constant even with one bulb blown.

For fast flashers with LED, you can pull out your flasher and open it up, then set up a circuit on the bench (12v batt, flasher, LED bulb), and try holding a capacitor (say 220uf) in parallel with the ones on the board till you find one that affects the rate. Then try different sized capacitors till you find a rate you like. Then solder blob it into place.

Or find a "trailer flasher" like Shultz mentioned.

Just an update.

At the Ecomodder meet, I got a camshaft from metroshultz. I am packaging it up right now and going to ship it out for an economy grind through Delta Cam or 3Tech. I have not made a final decision on which route to go and was hoping a few of you could chime in with their experience with either place as far as cost, quality, shipping, etc.
