Warm Air Intake
I think I'll take the plunge on this one. It should be rather quick to do and staring at the Ultragauge showing me -12F intake temps is ticking me off.
It's -32C with the windchill right now, but it's warmed up quite a bit since this morning. That was silly. The seat foam was stiff as a board. This is January weather fer goodness sake.

Warm Air Intake
Installed. Results look good after a quick boot around the block. Will post pictures and temps at a later date. Took ten minutes.

Well the mod sure worked as far as seeing higher intake temps! The weather's been so variable lately I have no idea if it's working to increase FE. I imagine it is just on the physics.
I used a section of metal 4" accordian hose. Removed resonating chamber from behind headlight and slipped hose over intake. Used a rag to seal for now as I'm testing. Ran other end to exhaust manifold.
I've been so busy lately that I can't say what the exact rise is, but I'm seeing 80F in the city today, and 90+F on the highway. Nothing over 100F though. I do notice a reduction in power, but not sucking wind too bad.
Pics later. Big day. Can hardly type.

Any chance you could do an A-B-A test for us?

Yes, I'd like to try doing that. This mod is quick to change back and forth. Only one problem. I don't have cruise control. Would there be any point in trying to do testing without it?
Today was right around freezing and I was seeing high 90's on the highway with a sweet tailwind, then up to 108F in the city. Power reduction noticeable.

Well, if you go WOT there shouldn't be any inconsistencies with A-B-A testing, but I wouldn't want to hurt someone's tank like that.

Warm Air Intake
Ok, finally got to taking pictures as I had to pull out a timer and reprogram it. Should turn on the block heater and oil pan heater before we leave on Sundays now.
Back on topic, here's the Warm Air Intake. I removed the resonating chamber to make room for the new tubing and pushed the 4" metal tubing past the two pipes extending from the intake tubing that had connected to that chamber. Then I stuffed a rag around it all to seal it up for now. This way I can return to completely stock if I want to. I'm liking the results so I think I'll make this more permanent when the weather warms in the spring.
The other end is stuffed hard against the exhaust manifold to pick up... Warm Air! After fiddling with the pickup end I'm getting 100F to 110F consistently. Weather has been hovering around 32F lately, so I expect that to go down.

Thanks much for the explanation and photo. If I understand this correctly, the rag is around the black pipe that's inside the metal tubing at the top of the photo, and the metal tubing is open enough at the exhaust manifold to pull in warm air. Are you concerned with not using a filter?
