Someone told me to clean above the oil pan to determine the leak.

It looks to me like it is coming from that screw in block plug area to the right and is traveling down and grabbing the bottom oil pan rail. Yes, clean that area with some brake clean, then check it again after a long ride.

The wind can definitely push the oil down wind when driving. Maybe this is a bad valve gasket? Check your PVC valve. A stuck pvc valve will pressurize the whole block and blow out oil in new areas, like the valve covers or oil seals. The pressure only happens with sustained driving, so when you pull over to check it stops weeping from the source.

The best way to source oil leaks is to add the UV dye to the oil. Drive around on the highway for a time then come back with the black light in the dark. The source will be obvious.

I replaced the PCV valve a few years ago and I have UV dye all over the garage floor.

That bottle will not stay up!

I really want a better UV light. When I checked the leak there was just a dull green glow, but I realized all of the fresh oil was below the gasket, so I replaced it.

This is after I sprayed with degreaser and hosed it off:

I scrubbed the bottom back of the block the best I could with toothbrushes and dishwasher detergent.

I need to:

1. Remove my battery charger in the morning,
2. Take a picture of the block,
3. Treat it for athlete's foot,
4. Replace the oil dye,
5. Reconnect the battery, and
6. Remove the jackstands and lower the car.

I keep hoping that driving to see one of my clients will be enough to identify the ATF leak. I have more distant clients, but this seepage was from sitting a brief period. I hadn't run the engine!


It had a bad oil leak, but I don't have any reason to believe that whatever is still leaking is as bad as the oil pan leak was, but why did it quickly leak out of a cold engine?

I need to bring a jug of oil and check when I arrive at my client's house?

So, that's good!

I spent all of my time updating another thread (you know who you are!).

The car is definitely leaking, but I had enough oil after my sessions.

I have my metal pan under my car.

There is a line of some kind of oil dripping down my transmission, but I was too busy typing to climb under my car [again].

I will post the picture later, but you can see a little more metal!

I may not have bolted the exhaust together adequately.

I sprayed with the carwash, hosed, sprayed degreaser, hosed, scrubbed with detergent, and hosed:

There is fluid as high as I can see!

Two guys suggested I just need to replace the internal gaskets and seals.

One guy claimed to be a master mechanic and said to spend 10 minutes cleaning so I can tell where the leak is.

Another 600 seconds?!

One guy suggested the transmission seal at the CV joint is leaking.

This makes the most sense to me, far more than the top of the transmission leaking.

There are two bolts extending from the bottom of the block, which made it easy to line up the pan.

I don't know why there is that hole.

Thanks for the reply. Is the stud set up common to Hondas or something someone rigged up? The one in the corner looks like the bolt is missing.

Considering all of the work I put into sanding, priming, painting, and curing my oil pan I kind of wish I had just bought one!
Here is a better view:

There is another one on the opposite corner, but it is outside of the gasket.

The aluminum EX\HX Civic oil pan has similar holes on opposite corners, but the steel DX\LX one doesn't.


While I wait for my Camry gasket I have been trying to find out exactly how atrocious it would be to replace the transmission gaskets and seals.

I haven't gotten anywhere!

I went through the 301 transmission-related pages of the FSM and paid for a month of AllDataDIY, but cannot find anything relevant.
