New LRR tires question

I am looking to get new LRR tires, I have a inroad on a good discount from one brand but I want recommendations on what others have used/ what results you got before I buy one type. My tire size is 205/55/16.

So what type of LRR tires have you used?

What results have you gotten?

What would you recommend?

Michelin harmony are really nice tires. Great tread life and great traction.

I've used Michelin Energy Savers and got 7% better fuel economy.
This tyre design is 4 years old though.

The newer designs like the Continental EcoContact 5 etc. have surpassed it by now. The Ecocontact 5 was good in fuel efficiency and wear.
If I had to pick one today, this would be the one.

The Pirelli Cinturato P7 performed very well in that size in the recent German ADAC.de tyre test - best with regard to fuel efficiency, and surprisingly also offering good wear characteristics (something Pirelli isn't really know for )

The C (seems to be the brand name ?) Formula was the best regarding wear, with a bit higher fuel consumption.

Another good balance between wear and LRR was the Goodyear Optigrip.


Dunno if you can get these, as the US often gets different tyres.

i was thinking about harmony's but they, and the hydroedge tires are being replaced by the "defender"

i thought the harmony's were spose to be pretty good, but michelin didnt give them the green x. the defenders are suposed to be 17% lower rolling resistance than the hydroedge w/ green x.

i know echo-francis recently put some on, waiting to see if he thinks they make a difference for him

I recommend reading the reviews/articles on tire rack. They seem to do some at least semi-good testing on LRR tires, their handling capabilities and fuel savings.

I've done a lot of research on LRR tires and I have tried a lot of the newer models. I also receive great feedback from other users on my other forum. As such I highly recommend the Energy Saver A/S for the best mpg AND the lowest cost per mile assuming you get the $70 rebate from Michelin. It simply offers the best mpg in any tire in this size range. In testing with the Prius, both new and old, the Energy Saver A/S offers 2-3mpg better efficiency! I have personally tested a 3+mpg difference between the Energy Saver A/S and AVID Ascend. I do not see them in a 205/55/16 soooo.

I would suggest looking at the Yokohama AVID Ascend (T) with it's 80,000 mile warranty and great fuel economy and good handling. The mpg is similar to the OE tire on the 2010-2012 Prius (AVID S33D). The Michelin Defender is untested in terms of fuel efficiency but it does carry the GreenX label (which doesn't mean much IMO) but it is affordable with the $70 rebate and it offers a stellar 90,000 mile warranty. All of these choice would be better in terms of fuel economy than the Continental ProContact with EcoPlus although this is a great tire are a great price. Cost per mile tends to be higher than the aforementioned tires, however. The Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 is a great option for cost per mile but the traction is lacking compared to the other tires listed above. mPG is better than the rest except for the Energy Saver A/S.

I have performed various reviews on the tires I mentioned including the Primacy MXM4. You can find them on Priuschat by doing a google search like "Yokohama AVID Ascend Review".

Just remember, just because the tire is labeled LRR doesn't mean it is as fuel efficient as other LRR tires.

Well I got new tires on Saturday. Bridgestone ecopia LRR tires. I filled up right after getting the tires so this tank (~300 miles) is all on the new tires. I can tell that something is better on this tank then the last few. the Scan gauge is calibrated a bit conservative (one or two ticks) and the tank average is 54.4 MPG. I have had several trips to and from work that have averaged 60+ MPG and over over 62! my former best trip to or from work in similar conditions was 56.4 MPG.

These tires have also reduced road noise by 10 to 20%.

I'm about to upgrade my 205 55 16 to 205 60 16 energy Saver Michelins. I hope this is a good move!

They would be taller and slightly narrower so it should work. Just make sure you get the Energy Saver A/S and not the summer version (without the A/S).
