I guess its Daewoo counterparts sold better in other regions than the European ones did in their home markets. I remember seeing one Daewoo Nexia, believe it or not, registered in the Dominican Republic, in 2002 in Florianópolis, Brazil. I would only see another of those in 2016, with Uruguayan plates IIRC.

There was a Daihatsu but I can't remember what they called it.
There were sedan versions of the Daihatsu Charade, which are actually quite proportionate, and the Daihatsu Applause which was a liftback even though it had the same profile of a more traditional sedan. Even though I also don't like the appearance of the Daihatsu Applause, its liftback is quite interesting to say the least, even though it's not as proportionate as in the Kia Shuma.

This used to be a favorite among local penny-pinchers.

Had a chance to drive a BMW i8

(jacobnev's photo...)

A Floridian friend of a snowbird friend has one of these. He offered to let me take it for a spin last week, but I didn't have enough time.

Maybe I'll get another chance in the spring when I return to drive home with said snowbird.

I asked him if he plugged it in, and he said "rarely". In his mind, the short electric-only range isn't enough for him to bother with the plug.

I got inside a BMW i8 once at the dealer in my hometown, but didn't take it for a test-drive. And even though I like its appearance, the position of the doors make it harder for me to get out, so much that a woman who seemed to be pregnant at that time attempted to help me getting out

I should have sat in it at least! Dopeslap to forehead. Definitely looked like a fun challenge to get in and out.

I still remember Jack Rikard demonstrating that when he (a 300lb individual) got in his Telsa Model S, the roof was so low he couldn't reach out to close the door. But he had a SmartEV that has a door 2/3rds the length of the car you can just fall into.

Knees are OK... touch wood.

My snowbird friend does not ride in his i8 though - lady in her 70's with a bad back.

Also spotted on my recent road trip south.

Haven't seen one of these on the road in ages.
