i love the people that change there oil in there cars once a year after about 4 years when hey have rattling lifters or strange noises from under the hood i tell them they need a 4,000 dollar engine. everyone is so upside down on there loans they have no choice but to fork up. i have put in over 10 engines in the last year in my drive way 6 due to timing belt breaks 4 due to improper maintance. i run mobil synthetic and a dealer filter i change it every 2750 miles maybe 3000 if im naughty maybe its over kill but its my car. just my .02 cents like the title says.

Do I have to run around and "cancel you out" today?

Yes you can change it too soon. Waste of oil, waste of time, waste of money, more stuff in the landfill even if the oil is recycled, and last but not least, the more often those busy little hands are in there opening **** up, the GREATER the chance of dirt entering the engine.

$20 says that this exactly the same stuff they've been selling for years, with no new additives.
If someone wanted to pay for an oil analysis on some new Mobil and some I have had for about 15 years we could find out.

i have one of those kits on it's way to my place right now, I wouldn't mind coughing up $25 to prove the new oil crap is BS, though I'm sure that goes against the whole saving money aspect of this thread

in reference to the apparent inability to change oil too often:

while working at sears I spoke with a technician for mobile 1 who suggested the changing oil too early in the oil life cycle could be detrimental to the engine, as the additive package in the oil may not have had time to become fully active, suggesting that over the life cycle of an oil change initially the engine wears more, through the life cycle it begins to wear less, until a certain peak is reached, at which point it wears more again.

a graphic showing this trend would appear sort of like a dyno sheet, where in the horsepower curve was actually displaying the wear resistance of a specific oil service cycle, which peaks at some point beyond half of its life then quickly drops off, indicative of more wear to an engine.

Frank Lee -- I never said it would be "cost effective" nor would it make more 'tree huggers' fall in love with you. Just referring to the engine's longivity.

And you believed him ?
A sales rep remains a sales rep even if they're called sales tech or tech reps or whatever. Normally, a retailer never gets to see anyone really in the know.

Oil and oil additives deteriorate over time, they don't get any better or more active.

Sure you can change oil too often, for all the reasons Frank illustrated.

3000 mile swaps on cars build from, say, the mid to late 1990s is ridiculous.
