2012 Golf TDI best tank of 52 MPG. Worst tank 43 MPG. entire 30K miles averaged 46 MPG. Mostly patient urban driving with load, no P&G, but glide aplenty and use efficient routes, time traffic to keep moving. Brakes are "usually" not your friend...

Best Trip

My best trip out of three on my "New 2001 Insight" is 77.3 MPG up from 61.3. Went from Maryville Tn to Panama City Fla. After reading some of the forum, I rolled up the windows and cut off the air. Tried to grab as much down hill energy as I could. Tried to do most of acceleration above the 100 mpg mark (lean burn?). A lot to learn, but that where the fun is. Loving the Car

Lean burn is a special mode the engine goes when there is low load on the engine. The air to fuel ratio goes from 14.7:1 to 20:1 and more sometimes. You burn lean so you take less gas.

But because of the higher emission of Nox due to higher internal combustion temperature, the insight is equipped with a special catalysor to purge the Nox. This is why when you are in lean burn sometimes the mpg drop and the engine suddendly gained more power for 10-30 seconds and then it return to lean burn operation and the mpg increase but you loose power.

Best tank so far is 65.4. I have to drive over almost every hill in Kansas to get to work I drive 60 miles each way, either way is usually a head wind one direction and tail wind the other way. Sometimes I luck out with tail both ways and then I get days with head winds both ways. Thank goodness for the ima, I don't think a Geo Metro would survive this drive every day! I've deleted both mirrors and blocked the bottom part of the grill completely. Also run my tires at 50 psi. Getting the tps mod and Imac&c next to hit my temporary target of 75 mpg tank!

New distance record in the Fit. 781 miles. I went deeper past E this time, so I got this record despite not matching my mpg record.

Two questions: 1) what is ima (not in Glossary)? and 2) what is the tps mod you are talking about? I'm looking for something that will hold tps (SGII), not speed. Long ago there was an add-on magnetic throttle holder that worked like a charm, but is no longer made.

28.54 on the latest trip with mostly HWY miles.

And, For the last leg of the trip (About 165 miles) the van had about 440 extra pounds in the back.
