Aside from the fact that EcoModder sells the SG2 (so, some obvious built-in bias), the things I like most about the ScanGauge are the intangibles:

- the first generation ScanGauge played a pivotal role in stoking my interest in ecomodding, since it permitted me to start testing mods, so I'll reward them with my business.

- the inventor/owner of the company is friendly, accessible & responsive

- it's a product made in the US rather than China

Those are my reasons for voting SG2.

I realize most consumers don't give rat's rear about those kinds of intangibles - it's all about the moolah.

If the Ultragauge doesn't develop some major bug/shortcoming, I fully expect it to continue eating the ScanGauge's lunch, unless Linear Logic releases a product at a similar price point. ( wink )

What Darin says is quite true. I've talked with the reps at Linear Logic (SG company) and they've been more than kind, helpful and giving (even replaced my SG with a new one when I had some issues).

I've got both an ultragauge and scangauge so I can speak on behalf of those two:

If price is absolutely no concern, I think the Scangauge just barely eeks out for reasons listed above. And because it's endlessly programmable.

The ultragauge however, has a much better screen. It is much easier to work with (just plug it in), comes with a mount, and is half the price. Unless one needs the SG programmable extras (I don't), I can't recommend it.

I've actually been considering selling my scangauge and buying an ultra for the few bucks profit I'll make. It's been such a dedicated tool though, it's like selling a perfectly good socket wrench.

The ecometer works well for what it does. And the price was right!

I ended up buying the ultragauge, and it was a pain to get registered for the rebate, but their customer service was polite and helpful.

I need to let it calibrate a tank or two to get really accurate but my initial thoughts are very positive, I'll let you know how it goes.

...I've owned and used three different units (in chronological order):

1) Auto Meter 9100 ecometer
2) ScanGaugeII
3) Ultra Gauge

...and, the SGII™ is the hands-down "winner" for my application on 2004 and 2009 Pontiac Vibes--100% trouble-free, reliable operation.

...I still don't know "why," but the AutoMeter has problems on the Vibes, and AutoMeter simply doesn't seem to care (or respond) about the isssue.

...as for the UG, I agree, that's the better co$t-value product, but it falls short in the 'technical' flexibility catagory, which is the arena where the SGII™ really excels.

...I look forward to hopefully seeing a ScanGaugeIII soon--want it for the wife's Cruze LTZ!
