In a gasoline powered vehicle that much smoke indicates wasted FUEL. No one has exer explained if that condition is also true in diesel engines.

Yes that's wasted fuel in a diesel as well. They do it with drag rigs so that maximum fuel is already there once the turbo spools up and it can make ridiculous amounts of power. Drag racers aren't concerned about fuel economy, so they just pour the fuel in on a diesel rig, as there's no negative performance impact in doing so.

Having worked with structural steels, the torsional forces on that truck on the right are incredible, I hate to think what would happen if that frame failed under such load.

I'd worry about the flywheel. They must mandate a scattershield.

yes there's that too. Everything about it is sketchy. The forces involved in something like this are incomprehensible to most people, and yet they have people standing 20 feet away in most of these events.
