Nature inspired: Drones taking a lesson from bats

It turns out big-eared bats get lift from their ears! ...and there is something more subtle about pausing on the upstroke. The picture they use is behind the point, but here's a quote:

The experiments were conducted in a wind tunnel in which trained bats flew through thin smoke to reach a stick with food on it. Meanwhile the researchers aimed a laser beam at the smoke behind the bats and took pictures of the illuminated smoke particles. The researchers then measured how the smoke moved to calculate the forces generated by each beat of the bats' wings.

To achieve all this, Ford people in Cologne spent over 2.8 billion Deutsche Marks (approximately the same amount in dollars today) for the development of the Sierra. Searching for the most aerodynamic shape, Heinz Ostendorf and his team spent more than 75 days in the wind tunnel testing all the design ideas. People were working hard in the Daimler-Benz Windkanal in Stuttgart, as they were guests in the facility, and only the costs of renting it amounted to 1.2 million Deutsche Marks. Every idle minute spent there was like throwing money in the huge fans of the wind generator.

Curbside Classic: 1972 Bristol 411 (and Bristol History)

In 1948 came the 401. Although this had essentially the same chassis, visually it was all new, and not linked to the BMW heritage. Instead, Bristol claimed a link to the aircraft heritage, showing the car in a wind tunnel and alongside aircraft, and reporting testing on runways, to achieve a drag coefficient of .39, which was quite something in 1948.

They've got the airspeed slowed way down in the tunnel and the subsequent sub-critical Reynolds number flow is causing premature separation.
