Diesel is $4.50 right now in Reno. Again. Almost cheaper to buy fryer oil and make my own Bio but since I retired I have only bought maybe 8 tanks of fuel in 4years.

Poor folk cant do the tricks rich folk do to not pay the taxes so all non income taxes are technically regressive.

And my income is so small, I don't pay much taxes, bought the house years ago so it's not taxed much. Thank you to all the other folk who pay to get the roads and such paid for.

Cooking oil at a wholesale is still usually cheaper than Diesel fuel anyway, yet I'd rather only use it as a feedstock for biodiesel after frying some potatoes and fish.

Yes the base oil is cheaper but you still need the reaftants: methanol and lye which increases the cost. My F250 could burn veggie oil straight but not in the winter, it's too thick.

Gas a year ago for me was around $1.90 ish per gallon, now its $3.15.

Sometimes I wonder what the actual efficiency rate of the government is.

Road tax here in arkansas is just the 28.5c/gal and hybrids and EVs got stuck with $100/200 extra per year. Registration on vehicles here are cheap though. Its like $25 a year for cars. Sounds like yours is based on assessed value more. Interesting way to do it. Don't worry though we are extremely close to being tax per mile here in the USA. I think some states do it already if i'm not mistaken.

Ethanol could be used instead of methanol. If I had a farm, ranch, or just a small country estate where I could grow feedstock for my own booze, maybe I'd also try to use some homebrewing leftovers either straight as ethanol fuel, or as a feedstock for biodiesel. On a sidenote, I remember some people used to replace lye with ashes while making soap, yet I wouldn't try it for biodiesel...

I'd consider either some electric pre-heating system built into a dedicated fuel tank for the veg oil, or just adding a few tablespoons of turpentine to it.

Everyone benefits from the roads even if you don't own a car. Everything in your house and the house itself came on a truck. Just add their costs to everything else the government does and stop trying to nickle and dime some kind of "user" fee. Why doesn't that work for say the public schools? Everyone pays because everyone benefits, kids or no kids. The roads are the same.

Agreed with the rest but I'm not sure what your saying here. Are not schools funded by [county] government? With curriculum [curriculae?] set by the various States?

Are you suggesting this is a legitimate area of concern for the Federal government?

Even someone who lives either in a rural area where the roads are unpaved, or someone living in some village deep into the Amazon where most goods arrive either by boat or aircraft, there will be some items arriving by truck from the factory to the harbor or airport. And to have their produce arriving at a market in a big city, it will be carried on a road-going vehicle at least once.

School funding is pretty balanced local vs state and then 10% comes from the federal level. I think I that's a good balance but all of it comes out of general funds not paid for directly by the users (parents of students). I bet the overall funding for the roads is similar as well as far as state, local, and federal but instead they try and put the majority of the burden of new and repairs on the "users". I looked up some stats and it seems federal spending on roads is 24% of the total but the point stays the same.
